Adventures

In 2012 and 2013, Harambee Arts organized two-week Work/Study Programs in Kathmandu, attended by twelve women from around the world, to study and practice Expressive Arts with our Nepali team of trafficking survivors and their support staff. In 2017 and 2018 we offered a similar training in Kenya. The experience includes five days intensive training and five days visiting and volunteering in our projects. This following quote by Pema Chodren embodies the Harambee Arts philosophy. Through our work-study program we enter a culture that differs from our own in many ways and our approach will not be as “helpers” but as providers of an exchange that will benefit both parties. Everyone is teaching and learning. “Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well, can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.” Pema Chodren, Buddhist nun
